“Can you really pursue a medical career as an Orthodox Jewish woman?”
“Is it really possible to navigate residency and fellowship and stay Shomer Shabbat?”
As an Orthodox Jewish medical student at Renaissance School of Medicine, Stony Brook University, I am asked these questions frequently. Many girls who are contemplating a career in medicine are hesitant to pursue their dreams. They worry how the long road to becoming a physician may clash with their religious values and priorities.
Enter, JOWMA. JOWMA stands for the Jewish Orthodox Jewish Medical Association. I created JOWMA to support, empower, promote and advance Orthodox Jewish female physicians, both current and future. Our inaugural event, “Navigating the Medical Career as an Orthodox Jewish Woman,” aims to develop leadership and education, while cultivating networking and mentoring opportunities within the Orthodox Jewish female physician community. This highly anticipated, already-sold-out event will take place on Sunday, May 19.
What else can you look forward to? First, membership. Our membership platform is actively being built; its launch will foster a unique arena where members can connect, network, support, and advise one another. Members will have the chance to lead and volunteer for JOWMA, and benefit from this supportive community.
We are also excited to announce our JOWMA Mentoring Program, which will offer unprecedented opportunity to connect mentors and mentees at every stage of their medical journey: residents, fellows, physicians, high school students, pre-medical students, and medical students. This formal mentor-mentee program will foster career changing relationships. If you’re interested in benefiting from the advice, guidance, and support of a frum female physician mentor- JOWMA is your key.
I am excited for the opportunity to connect with you all, and hope to meet many of you in person at our inaugural event next month! I can’t thank you enough for all of your support and enthusiasm about JOWMA- it’s truly palpable. For more info, visit www.JOWMA.org, where you can sign up for our email list so you’ll be first to hear about the new opportunities as they roll out. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to reach out.
It’s a beautiful day to save lives.
